Tokyo-based instrumental twisted funky music with exotic vibes

of Tropique is a Tokyo-based instrumental band formed in 2018. Their music sounds like a tropical gumbo soup made by mixing different types of old and new ingredients from all over the world with crazy spices to spice it up. While the clarinet plays catchy melodies, others use a variety of instruments as if they made their dishes as colorful as possible. Listening to of Tropique will take you on a little trip to the peculiar side of Tokyo, one of the most bizarre cities in the world. Latest album gBuster Goes Westh(Electric Cowbell Records) was featured on Bandcamp.

of Tropique - Totem (Live 2024 )

Of Tropique (bio):
of Tropique is a Tokyo-based instrumental band playing twisted funky music with exotic vibes. They were originally an exotica band of seven who formed in a 2018 collaboration with famous illustrator Jun Otani to make an art book called gLa Palmah. They released a single called gWooo/Zoroh in 2021, and then an album called gBuster Goes Westh in 2023 (on Electric Cowbell Records in the US). The album was a favorite on radio, picked by several countries for 'Best Album of 2023' playlists, and was featured on Bandcamp Daily (https://daily.bandcamp.com/features/oftropique-buster-goes-west-interview). After COVID-19 they became a trio of clarinet, bass, and drums almost like one of the old, Japanese Chin-don street bands (drum, clarinet, saxophone) that always played at local fairs or advertised the opening of a new pachinko parlor. The distinctive tone of Teppei Kondofs 1905 gAlbert systemh clarinet, with its bigger borehole and unusual key system, has the flavours of Cumbia, Calypso, New Orleans, Klezmer, reminiscent of both Eastern Europe and Japanese Chindon. Exotic melodies are propelled by a rhythm section of Daisuke Tanaamifs R&B influenced bass and Ryo Fujitafs modern funk drums, creating a pulse and a deep groove that echoes instrumental bands from The Meters to Khruangbin. The band's eclectic tropical-infused instrumental tunes have been used in ads for Apple and Gimlet, and they often provide music for fashion brands, TV programs and movies in Japan. They just finished a new tune with percussionist Mutsumi Kobayashi of the well-known Minyo Crusaders, and it will be released as a split single with Argentine cumbia star Rolando Bruno.
